How to Overcome Feeling Uncomfortable
Here's my favourite trick for releasing the anxiety you feel when you have to do something uncomfortable.
I know how scary it can feel to go into a situation where you're not sure you'll know the answer or you think you might do or say something wrong...
And one of the things I've found to be most helpful to myself and my clients is simply this:
Give yourself the permission to let people know exactly how you're feeling.
So if you need to have an uncomfortable conversation, go into the conversation saying: "You know, this is a little uncomfortable for me, but it's my intention to improve things."
If you're nervous about giving a presentation, start by calling it out: "Whew, okay, public speaking still brings out the nerves in me, but I keep reminding myself I'm not in high school anymore, so let's see how this goes..."
(maybe make a little quip about it to lighten the mood?)
When you simply lay your completely understandable human emotions on the table, other people will understand and relate to how you're feeling - and it will take the edge off for you!
Will you promise to try this next time you're feeling anxiety in a situation where you're putting pressure on yourself to be perfect?
